Lois D. Sardina, 100, passed away peacefully on August 10, 2025, while surrounded by her loving family.
Lois was born in Clifton Springs, NY the daughter of Clifford J. and Hilda (Cortwright) Datthyn. Lois attended and graduated from Shortsville High School, Class of 1943, and Cornell University with a B.S. in Home Economics 1947. After graduation she moved to Perry, NY where she taught Home Economics at the Leicester Street School from 1947-1950. She met and married Samuel C. Sardina on July 3, 1948. She then became director of a local girls’ 4-H program. After having her children, she worked part time as a secretary, bookkeeper and medical assistant for local family physician, Dr. Willard J. Chapin, until his retirement. She then worked as secretary/bookkeeper for Wyoming County Mental Health for 14 years, until her retirement.
Lois was an avid gardener, passionately tending her vegetable and flower gardens, a voracious reader, and crossword puzzle solver. She loved music, art and old movies. She was a wonderful seamstress, making most of her children’s clothes, a talented home decorator, and a marvelous cook. Her Christmas cookies were legendary! Above all, she championed and honored her family and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was also very proud to have achieved her goal to becoming 100 years old!
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband of 58 years, Samuel C. Sardina in 2006 and her sister Elizabeth Walker in 2005.
Lois is survived by two children, June Sardina Oates (Barton) of Canandaigua, NY, Timothy Sardina (Roxane) of Silver Springs, NY. Three grandchildren, Lindsay Sardina (Jessica) of Warsaw, NY, John Sardina (Whitney) of Pavilion, NY, and Amelia Oates (Marisa Rollolazo) of Seattle, WA. Two great grandchildren, Ariana and Jackson Sardina and many dear nieces and nephews.
Lois volunteered for 30 years as an election inspector for Wyoming County Board of Elections, was on the Community Services Board for the Mental Health Department, on the Board for resident house from Craig Colony, on the Board for a house that assisted people after hospital stays and was a member of the Wyoming County Arts Council.
Lois always believed in helping and making life better for others. She will forever be remembered for her compassionate and loving heart, her amazing memory, her endless optimism, her kindness, and her brilliant smile.
There will be no calling hours or services, as per her request. A Celebration of her life will be held in the near future. Please consider a donation in her memory to Wyoming County Arts Council or Perry Public Library.
